...or is this an exaggerated perception by the media?

What are your thoughts?

honestly i dont know anything about the stats...

i've been weighing it down, i see both the good and the bad...maybe we (our generation) act as if though we are not responsible for our actions? i've noticed that most are in it for the fun...by "it" i refer to LIFE.

off topic: this question makes me re-examine everything that i see daily...i do not want to be so negative but it seems the bad is in a tight fight with the good.

when i was around 11-13, i used to play the computer game "StarCraft" with my brother. it's one of those strategy games that are so IN now. But i gave it up. you know why? it makes one act like a god, and make controlling minions and characters so easy. and the worst part is, in the game, it's all about power. the one who kills and conquers the most wins. but then again it makes me wonder if it's just a guy trait...wanting power and control. my other younger brother seems to be hooked to games like this one, and mind you, he is waaay younger than i was when i started playing it.

but then i look at other kids, they seem to be enjoying beauty and color and such (barbie, disney, neopets) and makes me reevaluate. even the older kids who play RPG (role playing games), there are some who are in it to make friends, form alliances, and again, just to have fun. so maybe i am wrong.

i think maybe this is more highly dependent on the individual. his capabilities and his environment. i mean, i watch CSI, i theoretically know how to commit a crime "cleanly"...i love watching survivor...but i notice the bad nature that it brings out in man when they are fighting for money...i know how to manipulate people...but the question is, do i do them deliberately? the answer is no. so maybe, the same goes for all the kids out there.

maybe there are really lots of good people out there but the media feeds the negative because it is what seems to be the fad these days. i mean, do they feature..."kid found $50 and returned it to owner" or "man helped old lady cross the street" or "lady saved dog"? not nearly as much as the negative i suppose. and you know why? because that is what is in these days!!!

it sounds horrible but it is true. i don't know if it's human nature or if it's just what has become famous these days...but i think the reason to this is because...we find comfort in knowing that there are people out there who are in worse situations than us. that somewhere out there, there are people who commit worse crimes than we do. (my that sounds too horrible but come to think of it...scary)

sorry if im circling around your topic and made this question more confusing.

i just want to stress two points though (since they are what i experience first hand)...(1)teens these days act as if they are not accountable for their actions...and (2) in the eyes of a child, the wrong things that the elders do becomes right (that one is from a childhood commercial).

The media sensationalises everything..... however..... there is alot more teenage violence than there was 20 years ago - kids today are being handled to gently and are growing up with too much "POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT". Kids today aren't being made accountable for their own actions and are being let loose, then when parents eventually realise what their kids have turned into - it's too late.Kids aren't taught their limits and that not everything comes on a silver platter. Stop political correctness and let parents give kids a quick smack on the bum if they step out of line! Back in the days where this was acceptable practice and old fashioned values were still upheld, kids were a pleasure to have around!

A fellow respondent cited a statistic that there is less teen violence today than there was nearly 20 years ago. That might be true but I think the violence being committed is far greater than it was 20 years ago. You didn't have Columbine and the various Columbine copy cats 20 years ago. You didn't have children killing their parents because they couldn't have their way.

the bottom line is that today the phrase "life is cheap" is more relevant than it ever was.

Most definitely.

But there's not enough space to tell you why...though I'm sure you have some understanding of it.

We are the generation drawn to shock value. We laugh at rudeness and fund movies such as "Jack*ss." We (Americans) put self above all others. We are independent and unattached to those around us. We are indignant when someone disrespects us and demand harsh and immediate judgement though we did not practice politeness or charity in dealing with them. This is what we model and what the children have learned. Then we act shocked to see our lackadaisical attitudes manifested in the younger crowd who does not yet know how to temper their own thoughts and emotions and cannot fathom how their actions affect others.....and themselves.

I believe the stats show that there is less violent crimes in schools now, however, when there are crimes, they are more drastic. In other words, less crime overall, but the crimes are more serious.

I think that this shows an overall improvement in a child's understanding of how serious crime is, but I also think that for the few who don't live in reality are getting more ideas. Just an opinion though.

i will prob get sh1t for this yet i imagine it has something to do with both moms and dads operating. some generations in the past dad worked even as mum presented up the youngsters, it really is the way it will be, how are you going to anticipate childrens to take heed to their moms and dads even as they hand them over to childminders/nurserys for as a lot as 10hours an afternoon. All of my kinfolk were presented up this way, mutually with my personal daughter. i understand its complicated residing on merely a million salary yet we deal with, the in worry-free words luxurious we've is our computing gadget and that change into second hand!
