As many as you feel you can give what children need -- and what children need, of course, is subjective...
It is also important to consider what will be left for you and your partner, in terms of time and energy.

I have 2. I could see myself having more, sometimes, but then I think about this world and think maybe we should try and adopt or at least act as a foster family. We have a good, loving home, and frankly, beautiful kids. They're both boys, so the family name will live on. It would be nice to have a daughter, I guess. But maybe we've added enough to the world and need to start helping make it better, even if it's just one child at a time. If everyone in the world only had 2 kids, though, there would likely be very little need for foster care.

As many as you like.
However, you need to make sure that you can take care of them, feed them and provide for each of them. Kids can be quite expensive.
Yet, don't let anyone tell you what's right or wrong. If you feel OK about having 1, have 1. If you want 8, have 8. I think these days people worry to much about what others think. Live your life for you, and be happy.

As many as you can comfortably afford without having to rely on someone else (or the government) to pay your bills.
IF you can barely afford to take care of yourself, how can you honestly expect to be able to afford to take care of everything a child needs? Children are expensive. They need food, clothes, toys, if you are working, you have to pay for childcare, there are doctor bills, toys and books to keep your child occupied, when they start school, they will need school supplies and clothes for school. Dont forget about furniture, crib, bed, dresser, and everything else you can possibly think of needing for a child.

As many as you can economically, mentally and emotionally afford to support. Having enough money is important, but having enough TIME to invest in children is equally, if not more important.

Three I say three because if you only have one he/she cannot know the joy of having brothers or sisters. If you only have two then it is to easy to play sherlock holmes and figure out who did what. But three gets real livelyin that they always seem to blame the baby for stuff the baby cold not possibly have any thing to do with. And that is how I see it.
