Why must people define their individuality through association with a shared group ethic.
Be it race, religion, nationality, fashion, music or culture?
Why must a person define themselves as Germanic?
Why must a person define themselves as Black or White?
Why must a person define themselves as Gay or Straight?
Why must a person define themselves as a Punk or a Rockabilly?

Why are people under the illusion that individuality through association with others is something to be proud of?

Coherent answers welcome. Thanks

Many people need a sense of belonging. Tribes are there traditionally to protect and to provide socialization. The problem comes when tribe becomes more destructive to you than constructive. At that point, people remain in the tribe because they don't want to be an outsider.

As a loner, I find personal strength in individuality. I find that I am able to think critically and not just believe whatever someone tells me. I think that critical thinking is lost in the tribe because one tends to just follow whatever is expected of them.

You must think something critically first. You see differences everywhere, like color, religion, tribe etc etc. There is a necessisity for all these. You will know later of course.
Every one must and has the right to preserve, respect and maintain their own true identity, at all cost.
Just like different colors make a painting, galaxy, dress more beautifull and attractive, so there should be differences in these aspects which you have mentioned.

For the same reason you are on here asking questions...

To seek validity for your existance.

I see no problems with belonging to a group of people with common interest, as long as it's does not interfere with those who do not want to belong.

Quite simply stated, man is a creature possessing a social nature. In this it is obvious. However, mankind also tends to gravitate towards thoughs who bear marked similarities with him/herself. It is a very basic and natural thing to do and is able to be witnessed in nature itself.

Because all to many people have no idea as to whom they are so they seek their identities thru any means. They just don't or can't accept that they all belong to the human race.
