The song was written by Anka in 1960 for Annette Funicello, whom he was having an affair with at the time. Anka's version reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and #33 on the UK singles chart. Funicello later recorded it on her album Funicello sings Anka.

Twelve years later it was revived by Donny Osmond, who took it to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the UK singles chart for five weeks in July 1972.
