Minimum wage is the minimum hourly salary allowed by the Federal government. The current rate is 5.15 an hour. Some states have a higher minimum wage due to state laws, but no state can pass a law with a lower minimum wage than the Federal allowed minimum. The idea of minimum wage is to establish a median for income level relating to unskilled or new workers. Many people try to equate a living wage with minimum wage. Minimum wage was not designed to be a living wage. This is because it is believed that minimum wage is a good starting point, but that most workers will not remain at minimum wage forever. As workers gain experience it is expected that they will get raises, or seek employment at a higher wage with other companies.

I stand corrected on the Kansas Law. 2.65 an hour in this day and age is disgraceful.

Federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour. That would be fact as of 1995. State minimum wages differ of course. California this past week passed law to raise the minimum wage standard up to $8.00 per hour by the year 2008. I got this inf through a news report on CNN last week. It was also broadcast on Rochester local news, and ABC.

Minimum wage is a federal rating so every state is the same. wage is $6.15 per hour. But they been talking about raising it again, personally, I believe minimum wage should be about $8-$9.00 an hour because of all the high prices of things now days gas, cost of living, the economy itself!!
