why should we pay for a television licence. in this digital age is it not possible for the bbc to introduce pay for view. if we dont pay for a licence we can be prosecuted whether we watch bbc or not. If we all decided today not to buy a new tv licence would this not make the bbc reconsider after all they only have so much room in their prisons and it would not be financialy viable or possible to prosecute everyone. after all we are not forced to buy anything from any other market place if we do not want to it have.

so many people going on about sky and terrestial tv as tv viewer if you dont watch bbc channels and only watch sky you still have to pay for your tv licence the point of this question is should we have to pay for something we do not want so in reality you are paying for your sky or cable twice. when sky first came about in the uk you needed a tv licence to watch bbc this law did not cover sky channel a guy was taken to court for not having a tv licence although he had a tv but only watched sky he won his case. shortly after the government changed the law so that you needed a tv licence to use any tv receiving equipment this includes your TV,set top box and eveen your video. if you had a black & white tv( i know this is rare these days) and owned aclour video you had to pay for a colour licence.it is not the possibility of mass protest that wont work it is the fear of prosecution that stops people from making ther protest and that is why in the uk we get hammered by our own government.

because we are to ready to let them tell us how it should be. yes i know we can vote them out but in reallity they all have the same ideals and they know we wont fight back its not just about a tv licence. how many oter times have the governmet given a tax reduction in speech an taxed you on some thing else without you even realising. the people have the power but the government know we to afraid to stand up and be counted or that mass protest just cant be organised or people cant be bothered because the first thing they think is no one else will bother so why should i.

Its not down to the BBC, its down to the goverment and the mandate they give the BBC.
The alternative is advertising, ok for popular programs but all the special interest stuff from the BBC would disappear because sponsors woudln't pay for it. If you're happy to fill TV with Big Brother then sure, go fight the licence. Feel free to go to the USA to see the state of thier free channels. no thankyou.
You are not FORCED to buy a TV licence. You CHOOSE to own a TV capable of recieving terrestial television reception and therefore have to buy a licence.
I'd prefer a £300 licence fee and no adverts at all.

If we didn't have the BBC/TV Licence then money would rule (money = power) and just like the control of the majority of Sport in the UK, Sky would control the entire UK's TV network ....... very unsafe!
The BBC is the most respected TV/Radio/Portal on the planet and I for one am very happy to continue paying a fee for its continuation.
My folks 'choose' to add to their view pleasure and pay a ridiculous amount of money for Sky Sport each month. I could just about afford the subscription (about £36-£46pm) but am very happy with the service the present BBC & commercial netwoks provide ...... and a t £10 per month, I find it very good value.
Point to remember - the BBC isn't just a TV channel (in fact it's now several) but also includes the best radio on the planet, education material, a web site and most importantly ..... impartiality!
The BBC rocks!

It would not be practical/feasible/realistic to imagine that such a mass protest would ever happen. A lot of people like or even love the BBC and are happy to pay for it in this way. Or they just don't mind. The obvious alternative would be for all channels to pay for themselves via ads. Is that what you want - I'll bet a lot of people try to stick on the BBC channels to avoid ads!? Anyway, with BBC3 and BBC4 now - you get more for your money. And there are a lot of BBC Radio Channels too.

but realistically people in this country would not do anything, i know what you mean i really wouldn't pay for a TV licence as i very rarely watch TV and told my partner if he wants it he pays for it..simple, i don't think the American version is the way cause every 5 Min's an ad pops up halfway through watching a show its annoying enough when u watching on ITV when it has scheduled breaks.I personally don't think that the TV licence is worth the money that people pay, for the garbage that it churns out

The BBC's charter specifically states that it must produce quality programming... that is why we pay a license fee. Do away with the license fee & every channel will be full of the same reality TV / imported comedy / imported drama cr*p.
I think of it as a TV tax; no one likes paying tax but if your tax is spent on roads or hospitals then it is money well spent.

Why wouldn't you want to watch any BBC programmes?
Best TV in the world.
BBC News,
Drama (Jane Eyre, Bleak House, Pride & Prejudice)
Comedy (Little Britain, Have I Got News for You, Only Fool and Horses)
Sport (Wimbledon, FA Cup, Ryder Cup)
This stuff doesn't pay for itself

I don't like paying bills either, but as 'picked up' on here, the reason the BBC airs programs that appeal to adults of normal intelligence is because it's outside of the market caused by the 'consumer'- to put it politely.

We had a tv/video combination at work and the channels had been 'neutered' so we didn't get any channels and therefore not have to pay for a tv licence.
