How to match a shirt with a tie?

Hi, I got a formal occassion coming up. I bought a light blue shirt with maroon vertical stripes. Question is, what colour (and pattern: solid, striped, dotted, etc) would suit it best?

Have the tie tye into the maroon stripes. (get it "tye", lol) Anyway, you don't want it to match up with the blue, too much. You also don't want stripes, also too much. Do dotted or something similar. Can't really help too much with out seeing it.

I would go with solid maroon and a very very skinny pin stripe of blue or white. have a great time.
