I know they do this often enough on HGTV, but it's really not something recommended. The paint, even if sealed with a clear coat, will not last long. Once the paint begins to chip or otherwise become imperfect, bacteria from foods will find an ideal home. If you're sure that painting the counters is what you want to do, lightly sand, damp-dust, prime, then apply two coats of finish paint followed by at least two coats of a clear finish. Be careful when purchasing the clear coat that it is safe for use on countertops -- if toxic, even once dry there is always a risk. Acrylic paints work better than regular water-based on plastic laminates.

But if you're willing to go through the time and expense of painting your counters, I would strongly suggest that you consider replacing your counters instead. Plastic laminate countertops are inexpensive and easy to install. At least get a price for it from your local home improvement centre or cabinetmaker. Good luck.

No detail, but no offense meant. PAINT should never be applied where any food prep is engaged in,,,even in using cutting boards, etc. A kitchen, especially a countertop is likely the most used area in a house, second perhaps only to a bed or bathroom.

I suggest formica as an inexpensive alternative, or Tile, or the plastic sheeting sold in many home stores, although it won't be aesthetically pleasing.

I'd be happy to expand on my feelings about paint on countertops,,,as I've been in this business a very long time.

if you go online to www.hgtv.com and find "debbie travis' painted house" ... she is ALWAYS painting countertops. Id tell you myself -- but her site has so many ideas and step by step instructions -- that I coudln't do it justice. Not only that, but there are other shows on hgtv that have done that as well, and you can plug it into their search box. Good luck!

I dont know about paint, but there is a very cool product out at Home Depot and other hardware store I imagine. Its a granite spread that goes on and looks very nice. Thye did a sample of this at Home Depot and I was very impressed, they said you can cut on it but only to a degree and you can also repair it(although unlikely that you would have to)
