I noticed someone said plastic bag, well my tried and tested way Is 100% and that is Breath in and out of any paper bag . Blow into it first then grab the top ,squeezed tight and make a small opening by pushing your finger into the neck of the bag then just breath in and out into the bag . Do this about 5 times ,no more or you will feel dizzy .I have yet to find one person that this hasn't worked for . Go on try it next time

Absolutely , Yes my 9th grade Bio teacher told me this trick and I have been using for 20 yrs .. here goes
fill a plastic , foam or disposable paper cup 3/4 to top with water
bite cup while plugging your nose with your pinky fingers and ears with with thumbs.
drink water until you feel like it would be impossible to hold your breath even a second longer ( you must gasp for air , so if you need to start with only a small amount of air in lungs do so)
this works 100% of the time over 20 years has never failed . I think its something to do with an instinctual drowning reflex.. good luck

Hiccoughs are a cause of huge distress when it goes on and on.Caused due to irritation to the muscle layer separating stomach from Lungs, causing rapid contraction of diaphragm and expulsion movement.
Cant say 100% effective but most effective strategy I have is to breath in and out of a plastic bag(obviously with no holes in it!)
Not recommended for kids for obvious reasons(do not even mention/demonstrate in front of them!high risk of re enacting)
Other methods are as mentioned holding breath, glass of water gulped down quickly and so on.

What i usually do is suggest that it may be something that they ate earlier that has given them hiccups and then ask them what they had for breakfast/lunch/dinner. This usually helps to get rid of thier hiccups as this only a natural reflex action and so distracts thier attention and helps them forget thier hiccups. Good luck. It always works for me.

I once had a bartender give me a slice of lemon with bitters and amaretto on it, topped with sugar -
I am here to tell you it was absolutely the grossest thing I've ever tasted in my life, but the hiccups were instantly gone.
He says it's never been known to NOT work, apparently because the sour, bitter and sweet tastes just confuse your sense of taste.
All I can say is I've only tried it once, and it worked!

At school if you got hiccups they used to make you stand on a chair whilst the rest of the class just stared and waited for the next one. Total humiliation. Worked for me! Probably totally illegal within schools these days.

Jump in a very cold bath or take a very cold shower. Both guaranteed to cure hiccups.
