U should have backup software and free space
well, as best backup solution i do highly recommend True Image backup software. it's cheaper than other softwares and is very save and fast.
as for free space : u can use another HD or DVD(True Image can backup directly to DVD without any 3rd pary software) if ur
data is not too much

Before you get started, make a checklist of files to back up. This will help you determine what to back up, and also give you a reference list in the event you need to retrieve a backed-up file. Here are some file suggestions to get you started:
• Bank records and other financial information
• Digital photographs
• Software you purchased and downloaded from the Internet
• Music you purchased and downloaded from the Internet
• Personal projects
• Your e-mail address book
• Your Microsoft Outlook calendar
• Your Internet Explorer bookmarks
If you haven't already decided where you want to store your backup copies—external hard disk drive, CDs, DVDs, or some other storage format

If your hard drive is big enough, you can partition it (Partition Magic). Remove any temp files and unnecessary programs. Back it up with compression onto the second partition with Norton Ghost. Then burn the backup data on to a dvd. By keeping the partition you can constantly backup your hd on a regular basis.

Just did this two days ago. I used "Storage Sync" to copy my entire (partioned) hard drive (47 gigs) to an external hard drive. Took about 20 hours but of 108,000 files only 48 had errors.

save all of the stuff you want to back up on an external HD drive, and keep the HD drive in a safe place. also, if you trust your internet service enough, you can save it on the internet and hope that some hacker would not find it, but i'd choose to save it on an external HD drive

If you are running Windows, there's a built-in backup utility. Go to Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools ->Backup

That is no easy feat. Putting it on a desk that has well oiled wheels should help.
