I will be moving to South Africa in a few days. My internet requirements will be a few hours per day for research. Can anyone recommend a good (and affordable) service??

You can go for dial-up or DSL. Dial-up takes FOREVER though and you get charged normal telephone rates. Unless you go for Telkom Closer Option 2 plus 150 hour internet bundle where you can make unlimited national calls within South Africa during Callmore time - that's about the cheapest combo. Note that you will not be able to make calls while on the net.

With DSL, you HAVE to have a DSL line installed from Telkom (they're the only telecommunications company) and the cheapest monthly rental of the line will be R245 for a 384 line. Then added to that, you have to find an ISP (according to Hellkom.co.za, CyberSmart is the cheapest, about R125 a month for a 3Gb cap). In order to use DSL, you will need a DSL modem/router plus wireless cards for your pc's which are not wireless-enabled. Although DSL is more expensive, it's faster and you get to make calls while still on the net.

In 2007, Telkom's competitor, Neotel will be coming out to the market so hopefully prices will drop when that happens.
