Quickly pat the residue with the removed sticker itself... sticky side down. It'll pull the remaining glue off pronto.

If you use just a little mayo (which almost everyone has at home in the fridge and saves you a trip to store) and rub around. then you will have to use soap and water to get the grease off. this also works with anything that has a sticker on it that leaves a sticky spot. (i.e. picture frames, or anything but paper.)

I have found using a little vegetable oil or machine oil, applying with paper towel or a rag will remove the glue from anything I've tried it on. Including the hands!

Try just scraping towards the glue with your thumbnail. you have to start before the sticky glue starts and dig kinda hard . It is kinda tedious, but I do it all the time on lighters and gifts at Christmas and such, and it works.
