I suffer from this as well...it only gets worse when you start procrastinating doing something because you don't think you can do it perfectly.

All I can say is that making the effort to try is more important than getting it correctly. Besides, if you never make mistakes, how are you supposed to learn "the hard way"? Take each imperfection as a chance to learn something new about what you are working on and about yourself.

It 's an old saying but it's very true. Practice makes perfect. The more things you start and finish the more self confidence you'll build up and it won't be as frustrating to you. You sound like a perfectionist but rmember even perfectionists make mistakes. Take one project that you've started and not finished and promise yourself you won't stop until it's finished. Look at your work from other peoples perspectives. As an artist I have to do this all the time.Sometimes my flawed pieces are the ones people like best because they see something extra in the flaw that makes the artwork unique. It's something to think about.

I know what you mean! I don't even start things (or try them even once) because of my perfectionism... yes it's so irritating and frustrating, but what's even more frustrating is being told, and telling myself, not to be that way. Recently I've decided to allow myself to be perfectionist - at least in some important areas, because apparently I get a lot of satisfaction out of doing things really well. I don't know how well I will do with this new strategy, but I'm tired of hating my perfectionism. I'd like it to motivate me instead, because I think that's just me, that's how I work. I enjoy doing things well. If I can't I don't enjoy it. So I'll do it in a way I can enjoy it (as well as possible), and that is more likely to motivate me than trying to force myself not to be perfectionist...

In case this doesn't make much sense, I also agree with the above answerer who said: You ARE perfect. No matter how you do things. You already are perfect, and have every right to feel that you are.

the problem is that you can't do every thing perfect because you are not perfect & you believe that you should be perfect.

soulution: learn & take the time to do things perfect

ie. i installed a floor in my kitchen & put a scratch in it by accident. i was very upset. my wife told me why am i expecting professional results when i am not a professional. for you doing it you did a good job. i guess she is right.

i could choose to become a professional floor installer or live with my floor with the scracth. well the scratch really isn't that bad.

soulution 2: accept the level that you can work at

ie. you can paint on a scale of 1-10 a 6... so expect a perfect 6 & you will accept that level of performance. if you expect a 10 & your a 6 you will never be happy.

bottom line accept the level of performance that you can perform at or learn to improve that level to your expected performance

thanks,

SS

Hi,
Dont you think this happens to many of us. The biggest fear a person can have is the FEAR OF FAILURE. Probably you dont want to face the situation again i.e., you fear that you may fail again. Believe me this is just because you try to be perfect. You can try to be perfect but remember you dont have to be perfect in order to get a sense of satisfaction. Just think does that act solved your purpose. If yes then praise yourself and move ahead. If the purpose is not solved it just means that you have to try again. Next time when you finish something just say I've done my best and I dont have to do perfectly in order to be happy. YOU ARE THE BEST

Are you a "Virgo" by chance? Because, I have a Virgo 12 year old daughter, who is like no other child !! she loves to clean!! And organize, and everything has to be "Just So" so much, she gets frustrated, if its not "Perfect"!! This child has been cleaning her own room, on her own since, she was oh about 4-5 years old!! Without my having to tell her!! She's a perfectionist, about everything and gets very frustrated, if everything in her life, isn't just going "Perfectly"!! For such a young, "Preteen" I'm amazed at how independant she is!!! And has been for a few years!! This child will also rearrange, her whole bedroom atleast once a month!! And when she gets in the mood to doing this,,,I get frustrated!! Because, she'll have her mattresses in the hallway! Dressors, and anything she needs in the hallway, in order for her to rearrange her room!! Everything in the way, of us all being able to get to the front door !! Gets very frustrating, but I dont discourage her, not to do it, at all ! Because, I love it when my whole house is organized, and clean, and she takes after me, she's just a bit younger than I was, when I became, a "Clean-freak".. much, much, younger!! I think, if your not a Virgo, your a Libra!! Libra's have a tendecy to throw in the towel, when the going gets tough!! I'm a Libra, and I have done, (like yourself) quit alot of things, out of frustration, or boredom... But , the older I get the more I self-discipline, myself to stick things out no matter what!! At all costs!! Libra's love variety.. I get bored with the same ol' , same ol' , you know!! And if I cant get things right, I have had a tendesy to just give up!! And more or less, just say: "F-this!!!" You know... I would just dont ever lose your sense of self, or begin to mentally beat yourself up, like I have done so many times, in the past !!! Persevere!! Which is what all Libra's should do, in order to be "successful" at anything! I also think maybe your problem, might be, finishing things out, take too long, for you... Maybe, your too impatient, to wait for your ending REWARD, for your work, at things in life!! If your like this with doing things, are you by chance, the same way with relationships? Just curious.... Because, subconsciously, you might have something stemmed from your childhood, thats effecting you as an adult, without realizing it...Do some "soul-searching" as to why you give-up, so easily.. Go as far back, as to your childhood... And try to nail, it.. Maybe, this will help you to get back on track!! And forget all these people that will tell you to seek "Counseling", I've done that, been there! And guess what they do? They put you under a "Microscope" and make you feel worse, when you leave, than you did, before you ever got there, you know....Not to mention, you'll probably walk away with more problems, than you had before... Just because, they want you money, and they want to "Play-God".... No one's going to tell me, that I have problems, as they sit there looking like they have no problems whatsoever!! NOT!! Dont go to therapy,,counseling, or any of those psychiatriatic, classes, whatsoever!! There all a bunch of NONsense!!! Only my God, can work out my problems!! Good-Luck, to you, and chin-up, it will always be better tomorrow... The sun does rise again, to give you a new day, for another chance at things we all struggle with in life!! You have a Wonderful Day, now, for me!! Smile!!!

You can't go through life quitting everything. If you're going to achieve anything, you've got to stick with something. ~From the television show Family Matters
