Well, Yahoo is quite a bit corporation. Their sites are all free because of advertising. Companies pay Yahoo to put their adds up on the site, knowing that it attracts customers.
Now, why would a company advertise with yahoo and not another site (for example a chat site)?
This is because Yahoo can claim it reaches more people, as it is a totally free website with lots of facilities (email, answers, chats, search...).
So Yahoo provides a free service to us, in return for more customers, which makes their bargaining power higher with advertising companies, which makes them more money.
Capisce?

It is a vast opportunity for Yahoo to suck us into an email account, which in turn is an avenue for advertisements. Not to mention the fact that it gets you on the Yahoo page which is choc full of advertisements and Yahoo services.
