You need to treat the problem outside of your home first. Fleas live in the ground and only jump on an animal when they need the blood for their eggs. Spread or spray insecticide on your lawn. After that you'll need to bomb/fog your home (look for one that kills both fleas and their eggs). Use plenty of them. You want the fog to penetrate into every crevice! If you have pets you'll need to treat them as well. Use a flea treatment you've gotten from you vet. Over the counter products aren't very effective. After you've bombed you home, you need to vacuum EVERYTHING and EVERYWHERE, then take the vacuum bag out and burn it or put in into a sealed garbage bag and toss it as soon as possible. Be prepared to repeat the same procedure right away if you notice any new fleas. Their eggs can live for up to 3 months, and some always end up getting past the first treatment.

Something that works pretty good and is inexpensive is soapy water. Make sure your pets are put up for the night and can't get out (the soapy water will make them sick). Get a shallow dish like a pie plate or something like that that has maybe a 1" side, enough to put the soapy water in. Set the water on the floor and hang a light SAFELY over the water, about 4"-6" above the water. The fleas will jump at the light and get caught in the water. With the soapy water, they can't get back out again. It may take a few days but it does work and it is inexpensive and easier than the flea bombs and powders, which gets all over everything and you have to go behind them to clean.
Also, make sure the pets get flea baths while you are doing this, along with a good flea prevention collar or drops.

You could use a flea bomb. They sell them at the pest control aisle at the supermarket. Good brands like Mortien and Baygon should be effective and are known to kill the eggs too.

Remove all pets, bomb the place (flea bomb, not plastique) and have your pets dipped (flea bath, not chocolate).
