I've been bottle feeding my baby breastmilk, but wanted to try giving him formula once a day. The last two days he has puked it all up. My baby is 4 weeks old and I've tried Similac Advanced. Should I wait a few weeks to try again?

I had this - @ 1 week I was told to supplement with formula - we used SMA gold (UK) and he was fine. As soon as my milk supply upped to cope with demand he was exclusively bottle breast fed. As his appetite began to increase we then started to supplement again and found he started bringing lots back up after every formula feed. Following a projectile vom session I was too scared to give him formula and found myself pumping all day every day! Stressed and tired - 2 weeks later I finally worked up the courage to introduce formula to baby and sanity to myself (I have a very anti-formula Health visitor just to add to my turmoil!). He was fine and has been ever since. I don't know what caused the sickness - but he's now never sick follwoing a formula feed - he has 4 x bottles of breast milk and 1 x formula - hes a very happy healthy boy. It may take a while for their tummies to get use to formula - the powdered stuff tends to cause less of a reaction than the liquid type. I find feeding it too cold also caused sickness. Remember... jsut cause breast is best, this DOESN'T make formula bad - I get really angry with people judging you because you want to introduce formula. My son seems to really like the variation in taste of breast and formula.

Good luck - you'll soon find what works best for you and your child. Don't let others tell you what to do - parents really do know best.

My son just didn't do well on the Similac. Try the Nestle Good Start for a regular formula. I think the problem might be trying to give your baby both breastmilk and formula. If you ask me, I would just give him breastmilk unless your doctor says to do otherwise. I really wish I would have stuck to breastfeeding, because I have had a lot of problems finding a good formula for my son.

Hi there,

I have four children and all my children had to drink soy formula, my first baby who is 14 now had a problem with the regular formula. When you are switching over to formula you need to mix it in with what you normally give and then increase the amount over time. If your baby is spitting it back up go for the soy formula. There are alot of babies that have to do this. My children do not have intolernce to milk either it is just something they had when they were babies.

wait a few more days, his body may just be trying to adjust to the formula but if doesn't get any better,go buy a different kind of formula like carnation or something that is easy to digest. If that doesn't work then buy some soy formula. Good luck

breast milk is what a baby is naturally supposed to drink. All formulas are different. They are much harder on a baby's stomach. Also, there are more gas bubbles in formula. Try switching to nestle good start. They are pretty good, and buy some infant gas releiving drops to put into the bottle. Did you try soy formula, yet?

Many babies are allergic to formula or lactose intolerant but never have a problem with breastmilk. Talk to the pediatrician - it many be that particular formula and you just need to change brands or you may need to switch to a soy formula.
Good luck.

because mother milk is easier to digest. You will just have to try a few brands, hoping that one or other will work better for your baby. Also, you will need to be extra careful when feeding him formula, make sure no brutal movements that could stimulate vomiting.

No doubt that after a couple weeks, his stomach will have adjusted. But of course nothing can beat mother's milk.

Formula is designed to be taken from birth, I dont think waiting longer will change anything. It sounds like its the type of formula. I would switch to a more gentle formula.

Your baby is probably allergic to something in that particular formula. Some babies can't digest iron, etc. Look for the gentlest brand, call your pediatrician for recommendations.
