Hello Cez,
You do not have to keep them in pair, but as they are socail creature it is better to have a buddy with your, you can have two female two male (NO THEY DO NOT FIGHT) if you go to a rescue they will help you pair up your piggy with one that is looking for a home. They will make sure that they will not fight. A pet shop will sell you any thing, when you get it home they will fight. So before you try a breeder, or Pet Store try a site called http://www.petfinder.org there are piggies on this site. Most of them are sitting in shelters that euthanize and then there are some guinea pig rescues also listed on Petfinder. Just, on the right hand side of the page you will see ANIMAL under this you will see BREED you will need to click the spot that states (Click for breed) next click SMALL and FURRY then click Guinea Pig, there where about 1400 this morning.
You can also call the shelter in your area many shelters do not post piggies on their links so they just sit there waiting.
Other sites that are good in locating animals are
http://www.pet-ark.com
http://www.pets911.com
If in the event you would like to visit us just to look around, we can be found at

Some guinea pigs don't like to live in solitude - but it varies from piggy to piggy.
I keep mine with a rabbit - I have since been told this is not wise as the rabbit can accidently hurt the piggy if he bucks his legs or lays on piggy, however I can not split them up now because they absolutely adore each other, love cuddling up and playing together, so it is a risk I am willing to take.
I have kept guinea pigs on their own before and had no problems, but they did get alot of human contact so perhaps that is what kept them happy.

I know people with happy single guinea pigs, I myself have kept 2 pairs of males, we had little problem with fighting. Just so long as it's not a male/ female pair- unless you want babies. They can also be paired with rabbits if you want different animals

Not unless you have a ot of time to spend with it every day.
They really should be kept in pairs as they live in groups in the wild and a solitary guinea pig can become very lonely.

guinea pigs are VERY social creatures and will become depressed if not paired up with another guinea pig. You really have to be careful though. If you have a girl, make sure to pair her up with another female or else you'll have babies running around. Two males can either get along famously or fight constantly. It's best to get 2 females from the same litter. make sure if you get two that they are properly "sexed" by whomever you're buying them from (all guinea pigs look the same when their young if you just flip em over). There's links online if you want to learn yourself (it's not as gross as it sounds). Message me if you have any more questions!

From what I've read Guinea pigs need a mate and mate for life. Check out this web site:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_ pig, and see if this helps. Even gives you the history going back to 2000 BC.

no they do not have to be kept in pairs but you can if you want to,
i kept my guinea pig in with my rabbit and they were the best of friends.
if you do decide to keep them alone then you must ensure that you give them lots of affection and attention as they are sociable animals and will get lonely.

Guinea pigs are perfectly fine living alone. All they care is whether they get fed a lot. They do bond with humans better than other small pets.

They really need company, of their own kind, as they are social animals by nature. Pet shops should only sell them in pairs unless they know you already have one or more. So a pair is the minimum. Three is far better, as it puts off the time when you only have one lonely GP left. And GPs are such great pets, who wouldn't want at least two or three?

My sister has a guinea pig and he is quite happy by himself...although he gets alot of attention from my sister and I. All he cares about is when he gets his next treat. which he loves spinach and lettuce....He also like to make a lot of noise.
