Roots gather food and moisture form the gound the shoots are a method of reproduction for some plants. The shoot will become another independant plant that is identical genetically to the origional plant, tree, etc.

The root system anchors the plant in the soil, absorbs water and minerals from the soil, and stores the products of photosynthesis received from the leaves.

The shoot system consists of the stem and leaves. A stem usually supports the leaves so that they are exposed to sumlight. Leaves carry on photosynthesis and thereby produce the nutrients that sustain a plant.
