Sure, some have been built. But they were not very practical.

In order to fly well, the vehicle has to be built very, very light. But to make the wheels drive the car on the road means either a clunky, heavy transmission system, or a separate engine to power them.

Also, airplanes are sensitive to balance. Most small planes usually have most of their load carried far forward, and the tail is just empty space. They need that long tail to get the elevator and rudders out far enough behind the plane to give them a long lever with which to control the plane. But if you put something heavy far back, it can affect the balance of the plane enough to make it uncontrollable. All of this means that the passenger compartment will be relatively small compared to a regular car, hence impractical.

When you combine these limitations into one vehicle means that while it might do both of these functions, it won't do either of them well. It works out better to have a car for the road, and a plane for the air.

most likely flying cars will never truly flourish. some very rich people may own them, but more than likely they'll be illegal to fly outside of their private airspace.

1) it is possible to create, and they do currently exist, if inefficient.

but -

2) they'd be incredibly expensive.
3) airports have a hard enough time directing licensed pilots in airplanes, let alone probably hundreds if not thousands more flying cars.
4) terrorists would have a blast (umm, literally.)

I am with you 100%! I ask that same question all the time. I only know that if we had the life-style of the Jettons, it would put the Oil Companies out of business. They have been built and test already. The ideas are there, they just don't get marketed due to the Oil Industry.

Its all about the money. Someone would have to fund the invention, then the inventory. On top of which, the entire driving system, licensing, roadsigns, maps and such would be void and need to be redesigned. That's a big world twist. Do you think we're ready for it? Most people are afraid of major changes like that.

You can thank our fossile fuel loving administration for that! Just kidding I try to blaim them for that but it wouldn't be practical. However I do think they suck.

Several were built, they were not found to be very practical.
