Insurance companies use 30 feet as a guide.

In reality I'd be worried if it was less than that. Above that, the roots will be nutritanal feeders and not structural for the tree, so they will move around obsticals.

Its its closer, you can advise your council, they have powers to do something about it, but are liekly to wait untilit presents an immediate danger.

Your insurance company may also write toyour neightbour. Either way you are laying you cards out and your neighbout willknow your complained. You might want to tell then you are going to do this first, they may see sense,

If your in Florida, lime tree. Your problem may be a sink hole under your house. Trees do not cause subsidence. The opening underground of some time of hole, either ground water is gone or an old mine is caving in causes earth to subside.

Normally the roots of a tree will extend further than the crown (ie the branch/leaves.

If the branches are very close to your house then the roots may cause problems.

Also consider root proximity of trees to drains, etc.

If you have concerns, check with your local District Council, as they should have someone there who can deal with your query.
As a general rule, roots are as wide as a tree is tall; though there are some exceptions, of course.
I would not want a tree close to my house, that's for sure.
Good luck.
