I was thinking of getting Amazing Spiderman 129 for by boyfriend as a birthday gift - this is the first appearance of Punisher.

Here are my questions
One does that sound like a good gift for a guy i've only been seeing about 6 months?
secondly I know that this book sells for about 400-500 normally but on eBay they have some for 100+ that at least in the pics are the original not reprint and claim to be in good to NM condition - anyone know how trustworthy most of these eBay comic traders are? I don't want to put down 200 for a book that is useless.

Personally, I don't think I'd care much about the condition if I were your boyfriend. Just getting a copy - in any condition - is a great present! Buy you don't want to get ripped-off, so here are some things to consider.

You can pretty much count on comics purchased on eBay to not be quite as good as the pictures. Low-resolution pictures never capture all the wrinkles and creases.

Remember that we comic book collectors can be anal retentive about condition. The smallest, slightest imperfection can greatly diminish the book value of a comic, especially one like ASM #129, and you want to get the most bang for your buck.

Be sure to check out Mile High Comics, a reputable online comic book reseller:
http://www.milehighcomics.com/
Their prices can be high, but they strictly grade their comics.

Also, you can find local comic book stores here:

Seeing it before you buy it is best. Plus, you may be able to negotiate a little better price if you walk in ready to buy.

Good luck!

E-Bay is a dangerous place to shell out that kind of money. If you buy that or any other book of the like, there will be no refund if you do not get what you pay for. You will hear, "how do I know it was damaged it when you received it"? It would be to risky for me to try. If you go through with the purchase, good luck, and be sure to take out enough insurance to cover your loss in case you need to file a claim. See how long the person has been a member of E-Bay and their ratings. Be careful. I have bought from E-Bay before but its been years ago, and no I was not ripped off. I also did not spend that amount of money either.

I think it's a great gift if the guy is into comics. What movie was that in where a girl gave that issue to her boyfriend??? As for EBay dealers, check their satisfaction scores.
