Make a mix of warm water and fabric softener, use a sponge or cloth..ring out well and rub the bear with that several times, comes up clean and smells lovely, gently brush whilst damp in the direction of the fur.

Some of the carpet cleaning systems on the market have hand held wands to apply hot water with cleaning solution with a subsequent vacuuming to remove most of the water. I have used one of these previously on a large teddy bear with excellent results (the unit was made by Hoover). The advantages are that you don't have to go through a dry cleaning step, and the stuffed animal does not have to be immersed (this would damage the animal).

Honestly the best thing would be to have it dry cleaned, but that wasn't your question was it? So you could either spot clean it, or dunk it, let it fluff a bit in the dryer on cool, then air dry the rest of the way, and brush its fur with a comb. I have done that before and it looked no worse for wear. Hope this helped!

Oh and there are also kits for dry cleaning things in your own dryer. You could try one of those, not sure how much they are, but might be worth it if you have a couple things you could clean.

Build a Bear stores actually sell stuffed animal cleaner and it works. I have a few hundred stuffed animals so believe me when I tell you - go to Build A Bear. If you don't have one by you, you can order it online.

Rub it down with Baking Soda...... all over the entire animal..
Make sure it's completely covered...
Take a soft brush and start brushing....
After the brushing, take the animal outside and shake it really well, and then repeat brushing....

It works really well :)
