I was 5 weeks pregnant & recently miscarried. Ive had 2 children & a miscarraige before so im well aware that it was a definate miscarraige.
As its been some time ago that i was last pregnant, Does anyone know if i have to have a d&c or should I have any sort of medication?
Im pretty certain that the whole sac came away & im just bleeding now. I just cant stand going under anesthetic. my last miscarraige was incomplete & I had no choice. THis time im in more pain & bleeding more than before.
Does anyone have any advice or experience of this?

usually yes, i does 2 things, cleans you out so there is nothing left behind, and gives the doctor a chance to take a look-see, that everything is ok.

You should go to the doc. They can do a beta quant test & if your levels are dropping rapidly like they should then you probably won't need a D&C. I had a miscarriage between my oldest & second child, I went to the ER they did the beta quant tests & felt around on my stomach & said I didn't need one. I would just suggest that you go to the doc or ER & have them do that test to be sure because if it wasn't complete it can cause some big problems later.

I ended up having to go to the ER & have an emergency D&C a week after my youngest daughter was born. There were still membranes left over but it didn't cause any problems until a week later. I woke up one morning at about 6am got up to go to the bathroom & as soon as I got in the bathroom (I know this is kinda gross sorry) the whole bathroom floor was covered in blood. I was bleeding horribly. I lost so much blood by the time I got to the ER & had the D&C I almost had to have a transfusion.

So just in precaution to make sure something like that doesn't happen to you I strongly suggest go in just to make sure you don't need one.

Sorry about your loss, I know how you feel. Hope everything goes well for you & good luck.

Not getting checked out by your OBGYN after a situation like this opens you up to a lot of risk factors if you are sure that a miscarrige has occured. Infection being the main one. Your body is cleansing itself of toxins and tissue that was left when you had the miscarrige. Much of the time these leftovers decay and can cause a multitude of problems if a D/C isn't done. You are looking at the possibility of permanant damage, which means no future children, reproduction of bad cells can turn up positive pap smears, and septicemia can result from the decaying tissue. Just to be on the safe side, I'd see the doc and get checked out to make sure the bleeding isn't hemmoraging and that everything is gone. Don't procrastinate yourself sick or sterile before you do.

I miscarried at 14 weeks last year. When I started bleeding the midwife said if it got any heavier to go straight to hospital. She booked me in for a scan 5 days later as I was told I'd have to have one to check that I had had a complete miscarriage. I unfortunately heamorraged so had to be taken to hospital the next day.
As this is my only experience of this, I would say that you should be checked out especially if you are bleeding a lot as you don't know if you have lost everything and if not then you could be at risk of infection.
Very sorry to hear this and my thoughts are with you

I have never had a miscarriage, but from the friends and family that have, I think a d&c is the only way to remove anything that is still left inside. If you are in pain and bleeding then I think for sure you need to tell your OB. I also read that they can do a d&c using a local, so if you are afraid of the anesthetic that could be another option for you to discuss with your dr.

Firstly Im so sorry for your loss.

Im almost certain they would want to do a D&C on you as you are in more pain than you were last time - they may also want to do a labaroscopy just to make sure everything looks ok.

Personally I enjoy an anaesthetic its such a peaceful feeling right before you go to sleep - try not to worry too much about it - if you had any reactions to the anaesthetic last time just be sure to tell them about it and they should be able to avoid what ever it was that made you hate the anaesthetic.

Hi there,

I had a miscarriage in 1999, I did alot of bleeding and cramping, it felt very bloated and pressure. I was about 5-6weeks at the time also. I did not need a d&c they said when you are that far along that there really isnt alot in there. I felt crappy for a day or two and then continued bleeding like a period. Hopefully youll be feeling better soon, sorry!

When i miscarried i didnt get a d&c, i didnt go to the hospital. It depends on how far along you were. If the placenta hadnt formed i personally wouldnt be worried.

I did have an infection for a month or so after ( i didnt realize i had one until it cleared up and things were normal).

I believe the medical community would panic and go absolutely hysterical if you didnt go in and get flushed out.

If youre in pain, have a fever, or are passing huge clots after the fact, or blackened blood, you probably should get checked out.

better to get a d&c than lose your uterus.

I had a miscarriage 3 months ago and i didn't have to have a d&c. You should go see your ob and they can do a ultra sound to make sure you got rid of everything ok. My husband and i are trying also and I have 2 children from a previous
marriage .I understand what your going through .Hang in there.

Being pretty certain probably isn't enough if you are experiencing alot of pain and bleeding. The safest thing you can do is to get checked out, and if a medical professional advises you the D&C is necessary, you should have it done.

I had one after 8 weeks, but I would say no. If you are going to try again soon it just might take a while before you stop bleeding.

I'm very sorry for you loss. I know how hard it is even at an early stage.
