I usually use my laptop (iBook) only one floor away from the wireless router - about 25 feet - and signal strength can go from full to nothing. I've been checking out different antennae. Does anyone have experience with these?

Before you buy more hardware, you are probably having interference problems. You should go into the router and try a few different channels. There are 11 to pick from. I would go far away from what you are using first.

Things that cause interference:
Microwave ovens
2.4 MHz cordless phones
Other wireless networks on the same channel.
Anything with an electic motor like an air conditioner.
Metal between you and the router

It should make 25 ft without any problem that is why I would look to interference first. Also the signal strength is there sometimes. Look for things in the area that are running when it is low, and are not when it is high.

If you do go with a better antenna, I have had the best luck with a directional one on the client side. That is what the Pringles can does for you, but you can also buy them already made. That is not always doable on a laptop since there often is no where to attach an antenna.

I would recommend trying to buy different antenna's for the card or trying to relocate the wireless router or your computer for bretter strength. As well as I have a link at the bottom that you can go to for 10 steps to increase wireless connetion.

believe it or not Pringles tubes make great signal boosters, cut a hole in the bottom just big enough to fit over the areal and you'll find it will improve your range by about 15-20%... also the higher up with the less things in the way the better the signal will be

I ran into this problem before with a linksys wireless router. I went in and set static ip addresses which helped and then I made a work group(MSHOME) which seem to fix the problem. When I say work group I am not talking about your SSID, I am talking about your actual windows workgroup

Could also buy a repeater and put it downstairs to boost the signal.
