Vinton Cerf is considered the Godfather or Grandfather of the Internet as it was he who created the IP addressing shema to uniquely identify all hosts on the network.
Outside of that, it was a bunch of gearheads who thought it would be cool to connect a college in Southern California to Cambridge, MA at wopping speeds of 150/300 bps.
