The metal is very thin, probably aluminum or tin, and it has rust and corrosion around the seams. I do not want to remove the paint or take away any of the character from the item so sanding or harsh chemicals are out of the question, I just want to clean it up a little. Does anyone have any suggestions or tried and tested methods that I can use?

Check out the link below for tips on removing rust -- many of them use natural materials that are non-corrosive and should not affect your antique. Good luck!!

Try RustBlast from KBS Coatings. http://www.kbs-coatings.com/RustBlast-C33.aspx

I have used that before with a scotch brite pad and it works really well.
