I had directv with tivo and loved it, then moved to apt building where i could not put up a satelite dish and had to go with cable.Comcast, they blow by the way, directv so much better, anyway I went with the cable companys dvr, it was such a piece of crap it sucked so bad, I ordered a tivo directly from the company its wonderful its so great I seriously love it I mean you should most definately get one.It makes everything so much easier, it is the easiest to use, system ive ever seen in my life. You will not be dissapointed with a tivo. Its 30 bucks for a dual tuner box, which you will want, once you have it you will love it and like 20 bucks amonth for service, sooooo worth it.The box is shipped to with complete instructions everything you need,

It's great. You can "program" what shows you want to watch just by searching for their names or viewing a grid of all the shows on at that time. Once you find a show you like you can ask the TiVo to set a Season Pass and it will "follow" that show no matter where the network moves it (times, dates, special events)
If you use the Thumbs Up/Down buttons it will learn what you like and automatically record shows it thinks you'll like when you're not watching something else.
You can either buy a box yourself and pay monthly or they do have packages that will let you get a box and service for a certain amount per month. See TiVo.com for info on that since I only know what I've been doing.

TIVO is excellent.
1 - it keeps information about all the tv channels you receive through whatever service you use (cable, etc) up to a few days ahead.
2 - you can pause live tv (for up to an hour), rewind, or use fast or slowmotion.
3 - you can record *a lot* of tv shows without a tape or cd into TIVO's memory - either manually by date/time, or by show. you can either do one-time recordings, or record a show on a regular basis.
4 - once you've turned on the tv, you can rewind live tv (up to 1 hour) on that same channel (only).
5 - with advanced TIVO, you can search live tv. (for example, if you love horses, you can search for 'horse' and it will return with any tv show with 'horse' in the title or description of the show.
6 - while recording something using TIVO, you can watch another program at the same time (through a different input only.)
you do have to buy the device. with basic TIVO, usually with the device comes a lifetime subscription to the service. with advanced TIVO, i'm not sure (i only have basic.)
i definitely recommend it.

i have dvr...not sure the difference in tivo and dvr....probably about the same. dvr is awesome! i can record 2 shows at once but i have to watch 1 of those 2. but if you record just one show you can watch something else.you can pause, rewind live tv. its awesome! i think it is an extra 13 or 14 bucks a month through my cable company...didn' t have to buy the box. that is included with that price

If you go with dish network, they offer pvr which works like that. If you are watching a show, you can hit the pause button and play again. It is an extra 20 or something dollars a month but I record my soaps while I am working during the day.

it's better to get a DVR though your cable or satallite company instead of buying Tivo by itself.
