I have just discovered Trudi Canavan. Her black magician trillogy is brilliant, lots of twists and turns and I will buy more of her novels but I don't have a favorite as such. When you stick with the same author, you kind of know what you're getting because it's the same style of writing. I have read a couple of Martina Coles, they're very good and I will read more in the future.

Phillip Pullman & Terry Pratchett
I like Martina Cole but they all just start to sound the same after a while- I just finished that one by her 'The Take' and its rubbish compared to the books she did at the beginning!

Hard to list only one. At the moment Trudi Canavan, but others include Chris Wooding, Philip Pullman, Kelley Armstrong.

Charles Dickens, what wonderful characters and a sense of time and place coupled with such nuances and details as to emote real empathy with the characters not forgetting the wit and the universal themes of the stories.
