I bought an 03 plate Rover 25 3 weeks ago and in the past few days it's taken a bit to start (ie I have to press the accelorator to get it running). It runs fine when started and only seems to happen when there's its than a 1/4 full with petrol... I have a 3 month guarantee but was wondering if anyone knew why it's happening and whether I'd be able to get it sorted under the guarantee?

There are a couple of possibilities with this, it could be that your fuel gauge is reading incorrect and your actually quite low on petrol, it could be that the fuel pump used to feed petrol to the engine is weak and probably on the way out which is why your having to use the pedal (check to see if you can hear a buzzing noise when you turn the ignition on before you actually start the car) or it could be a dirty pre run injector on the injection system (try running the car with a fuel cleaner like redex for a week and see if this helps). It is always worth checking with the garage where you got the car from but in all reality they will normally try to wiggle out of any responsability, stand your ground with them.

next time it hapens open the petrol cap and let the air in. if starts first time then the vent pipe to the tank is blocked. you could also try the air filter as it might be blocked with dirt and starving the the car of air on startup.

Definitely down to the dealer, if they're reputable, you should only have to ask, but be prepared to be firm with them
