don't give a 2 week old prune juice. that's not good. god...no water either. she doesn't need that and teamed with the formula or breastmilk, you could overwork her new kidneys.

she might not actually be constipated. she's brand new. you can probably count on 1 or 2 hands the number of times she's pooped. it's probably not pleasant for her, is it pleasant for you? you're just used to it. she's only constipated if...it's hard little pellets. anything else is normal. and, please, call the dr. before you give her anything. if 2 week olds could handle prune juice, everyone would give their 2 week olds juice.

2 Week Old Baby Constipated

No your two week old baby should not be constipated.

1. The formula is the usually culprit. Change formula...If the baby is on formula with iron try the same brand without iron. You might have to change a couple of times to find the formula that your baby can tolerate. If you still have milk in your breast you might think about breast feeding, I have never known of a breastfed baby being constipated.

2. kayro corn syrup in the bottle will help get this one to pass but you do not want to rely on this so early. (1 tsp. in 2 oz of formula)
(you can also use a ivory soap suppository to make it easier for the baby to get it out. slice a piece of ivory soap, rub with warm water between fingers until completely smooth, about the size of 2 toothpicks put together width, and 1/2 inch long insert and hold. Usually only takes a couple of seconds).

3. You should not have constipation with your baby until they eat solid foods at about 10 months of age. (And then you will have to adjust to get it taken care of)

4. call your doctor if this does not clear up in a couple of days.

It can happen...Especially if you are using formula. Sometimes it's just the formula sometimes it's the iron in the formula. When it comes out is it thicker than it used to be? That's a sign that she could be constipated. My pediatrician recommended using a small amount of pear juice (because it's the mildest) diluted with equal parts water. Since she is so young she probably shouldn't have more than an ounce. Otherwise you can lubricate her rectum by putting a little Vaseline on a Q-tip or thermometer and inserting it a little ways into the rectum.

Do you have the baby on forumula with Iron? If so, then it's completely normal for the baby to be constipated. My daughter went through it. You can call the pediatrician's office and see what to do. I used Kayro Syrup. Our Ped said to work with it. Start out with a tablespoon for 1 feeding....if it doesn't work, use 2 tablespoons the next feeding. The doc said Kayro is something you have to "work" with.
Don't give laxitives unless you consult with the pediatrician.

Sorry to hear that your little one is constipated; this sometimes happens with little ones and as parents we can't help but feel helpless. Dark Karo syrup will work and so will the water. I would use a combination of both (2 ounces of water and a capfull of the Karo syrup) between her regular scheduled feedings. I would also use the same amount of Karo syrup in her formula. If you use a powdered formula you mix this with water. Just boil the water first, and give it to her at room temperature mixed with the Karo syrup. I had the same problem with my children.

It is normal to be a bit constipated. If you are breast feeding make sure you are not eating the foods that cause it. Don't give your baby juice, it is not good for them and I know this because I asked my paediatrician. If you formula feeding her maybe you should try another formula.
