I live in NYC. I don't eat many trans-fats. But when I want a donut or french fries, I like knowing they're an option I can have as a free adult citizen. I *hate* the nanny state.

Who else is *pissed*?

I'm working on my letter to the Health Department.

My father died of heart disease when he was 38. Therefore, I am careful. I don't need the NYC health department to make choices for me. I can make them just fine by myself.

Every time I hear about choices being made for me I feel we are sliding into a socialism/communist government. But this part of the article I read seems to state that the people for the people want the government to think for them.

"Three-quarters of those polled percent said government has a role to play in tackling the obesity problem in the United States and helping people develop healthy lifestyles."

When they ban this trans-fat there will be a vast amount of people who say, OH nos! However, there will still be french fries and the like. You don't have to use trans fat oil in restaurants. There are lots of other oils that work just as well. So, really, it is not such a big deal.

But what will be on the next banned list? Hmm...let me think about it.

Maybe they will ban 40oz bottles of malt liquor next? Not too many people will object to that.

What's next? Hmm....maybe ban the 1 cigarette selling practice. Not a bad idea.

What's next? Maybe limit the number of miles per day you are allowed to drive your car in the city? There's a good reason for that too..

Next? Limit the number of visits to the mall per person on Saturday and Sunday? Good reasons for that too.

Next? Limit the amount of children each person is allowed to have. Good reasons for that.

Next? Ban alcohol in any place that has doors.

Next? No religious jewelry can be worn in public.

Next? Have armed guards at every major intersection to make sure the right people are traveling there.

You get the picture, right?

It's coming.

OMG!!!!!!!!! I can't believe this!! I can understand the smoking ban due to second hand smoke, but there is NOTHING second hand with trans fat! This is taking away the free will and choice of a person! They can't do this...this is terrible!! Not to mention the fact that I have seen very few overweight people in NYC...they walk everywhere. Unbelievable! WE get to choose what foods we put in our bodies, good or bad.

May be they take some terror defense funds from your state for that tran-fat ban enforcement. At least no trans fats slipping into the city. That's nice.

What a silly article!

I realize that transfats are unhealthy, but if you ban tranfats, what on earth will people eat?

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but when you consider every single fast food chain's menu consists of trans fats, and just about every single processed food out there includes these transfats, it makes no sense shut it all down after years and years of just ignoring it.

Also, eating transfats isn't like smoking. It hurts only the consumer, not those who chose not to do it.

I agree with you. I think you have the right to make your choice on this one.

It's perfectly possible to make all your favourite foods without using trans fats - they'll taste better too. Trans fats have no nutritional value whatever and are in fact actively harmful.

You'll thank them when you are older and you don't have heart disease. They can make those donuts without trans fat.

Apparently republicans only want to decry "big government" when its convenient for them. The rest of the time, they want to control every last single facet of our lives.
