being a coolie girl I get upset when people call me mixed race(half black and white) not because I hate them but when they usually say that they look at my hair and make the decision but I have quite brown skin and I don't think I’m light skin and if my hair was short they wouldn't think that. also usually it means they think black people can't grow hair so the only way my hair could be that way is if I was half white but I share nothing in common with the looks of mixed race(half black and white people) expect my hair. I am not racist or any thing but if for the past 9 years I have been living in England, London you are being asked that question you can understand how you can get upset it gets annoying. But the question is- is their any coolie girls or guys that get the same thing and feel the same way, don't you think how long blacks Caribbean people have been in England they should of realised about coolie people or is it just ignorance.

Mixed race does not just mean black and white.
It means mixed race, any mixture of race.
You yourself have described coolie as been a mix of black with Indian, Chinese etc.
People who refer to you as mixed race are not presuming you are half white, they are acknowledging the fact that you are of mixed race- which is what coolie is.

The term "Mixed Race" is pretty self explainitory. It doesn't just refer to "black" and "white." People refer to you as mixed because you are a mix of two or more races.

As for the "hair" thing, I'm quarter Indian, so I do get that a fair bit aswell. That is because even in this day and age, it is rare to find a fully black african/caribbean with long hair, unless it's a weave! Not to mention that the UK is more culturally aware than you realise. You'd be surprised how many white people know what a weave is!

You can learn a lot about a country in 9 years. But in the case of the UK, it is not enough time to learn everything. If you think London is racially diverse, try moving to Birmingham! You'd be amazed.

BTW my background has taught me that "coolie" is quite a derogatory term, much like "kike" or "polack," so don't use it.

Hello from the US! I grew up in the Carribbean where decendants of African slaves and Carib "Indians" are called West Indians, not Coolies. You might like to know that the term "coolie" can be offensive in the US. Also, the major races of the world are thought to be Caucasoid (white/European, Japanese), Negroid (Black/African), and Mongoloid or Sinoid (Asian, East/West Indian, Eskimo). According to many anthropologists, that would make you "mixed race" as a decendant of Blacks and Carib Indians. Maybe you could think of yourself as Exotic or Multicultural! I know that the British, and many other whites, can be hung up the mixed race thing. As globalization progresses, there will likely be very few single-race people after a while anyway. Anyone still stuck on labels will have a hard time. I'm sorry if this bothers you right now, or if other people's questions are annoying. FYI, I am a "Euro-mutt" -Romanian, Hungarian, German, French, Scottish. Cheers.

I might be wrong but I thought a coolie was a Chinese man who pulled a rickshaw?

And why get upset when people call you mixed race when that is precisely what you are. Many black or partially black people are a pain in the **** these days always whining about what they are called, we have to call you something and no matter what terminology we use someone who is non white is going to get upset over nothing.

I am white and you are welcome to call me white, whitey, honky, pink or pinky, off white, light white, dark white, grey, tartan or green with pink stripes, I don't care because I do not have a chip on my shoulder.

By the way, my girlfriend is a tequila brown.

try writing with interpunction because the longer the story the more difficult it becomes to read if you can't tell where a sentence ends and the next one starts

Anyways, black/indian, black/chinese, chinese/indian, black/chinese/indian, etc., are all mixed race, so I don't really understand your irritation.

And why call yourself a Coolie? There are so many names for mixed race (Mulat, for instance), and every distinction is a racial distinction, so by some interpretation can be seen as discriminating...

If people called you halfblood, which used to be the standard term for mixed race, then I would understand your irritation, since halfblood sounds like only half of your blood (half of your DNA) is worth mentioning

Oh dear. Not very nice responses. It's not the end of the world to be mistaken for mixed race (black and white), you just correct them. Technically, you are mixed race anyway.
