Dogs still deter for most opportunist burglars

Here's what happened. One of your flatmates robbed you. Trashed the place to give the appearance of a burglar rifling through everything. Probably didn't have anything valuable of theirs broken but empathized with you by saying they also had things stolen. This scum then broke the door lock to continue the ruse. A real Burglar only needs to check certain areas, not every drawer in the house. A real burglar will go to the drawer next to your bed, your dresser, the freezer, under your couch, in the shoes in your closet and in the pockets of clothes in your closet. Maybe i missed a spot or two. OR your landlord has a teen age kid that has friends and they aren't yet accomplished criminals. So either a flatmate or your landlords kid and his friends. Not a pro. Good luck.

Go to your local police station - they will supply you, free of charge, all the info you need to help you protect your property. Think about double glazing if you do not already have it. I have lamps front and back of my house which switch on at night when they detect 'heat' coming from a person or animal approaching the house. I also have a couple of false but real looking cctv cams mounted front and rear. These cost about £15 English and operate using a battery which causes the cam to move across a preset arc and also operate a small red flashing light.

Get the "Who's Who" book of local Burglars (available at Pick 'n Pay / Woolworths, and all good bookstores) and go and have a word with the contents. Tell them you know who they are and that if your house get's burgled, you'll come round and Biff them!
Failing that, join all your door and window handles with elastic (that looks like string) and, in plain view from each door and window, hang a mock grenade to each piece of elastic by the pin. Who would dare open your doors or windows, except you, coz you know it's really elastic and the bombs are dud. (Oh and everyone else who has read this answer. Sorry!!!).

In the USA buy a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber to shoot intruders. In the UK do nothing but thank them on the way out for not injuring you, and not making too much of a mess, because the law is on their side , and if you attack them , they will sue you in court and win. AN ENGLISHMANS HOME IS HIS CASTLE HA-HA
Dont even think of buying a vicious dog , the same rules apply.

Well I have two growen sons, both are Locksmiths...and? it would seem, if they want to get in (burglars) my boys say they can!.....But, you can make it quite hard for the Burgs.
It all depends on where you live...how much you can spend...how important....it is for you.?
I have a close/c/camera out side my house....With posters !
I didn't ask for it, as its one of those real long ones...my boys just wanted it there for me.Window locks, are good....Look at the end of the day....if you want top security...A gaurd dog-close/c/camera, locks on all windows.Roller shutters to all windows, internal monitors-you name it!! you can have it...Just depends on how safe you want to be....as far as them getting in?..well thats where I believe you CAN be safe in your own home, if you use all of the above....esp/if you have a real good gaurd dog!! with nice big teeth...These days, you have to make sure your safe in your own home.

Keep your doors and windows locked especially at nt. Keep a light on outdoors in the front and back if possible, and on line you can purchase ADT. signs, that alone should deter anyone. Also put up Beware of Dog sign even if you don't have one.

Buy three caskets, they don't have to be expensive. Leave them on the lawn.

On two of them put names, like Anthony Jones and Steven Smith with two recent dates. Leave the third open and put a sign on it that says 'Who's next?'
