Here's how you can find the answer yourself: divide by ascending positive numbers.

Start by dividing 2001 by 1, which gives 2001. Write (1, 2001) on your paper.

2 doesn't divide 2001, but 3 does, giving 667. Write (3, 667) on your paper.

We don't need to test 4, or any other even numbers, because 2 wasn't a factor. Neither, as it turns out, are 5, 7, 9, 11, or 13. How much higher do we have to go? The guide is: you can stop when you reach the square root of your number (2001), which is about 44.7.

So we keep going. We don't have to test 15, because 5 failed as a factor. 17 and 19 don't work. We don't have to test 21, because 7 failed as a factor. Ah, but 23 works! 2001/23 = 87,l so write (23, 87). We don't have to test 25 (because 5 failed) or 27 (because 9 failed), and 29 works: 2001/29 = 69, so write (29, 69) on your paper. Then we keep going until we get to 44, and no more factors work.

Do any of those pairs add to 98? Yes, 29 + 69 = 98. There's your answer. Hope that helps!

Hi, to solve this question, we have 2 equations:
Let a = first number
and b= second number

(1) a x b= 2001
(2) a+b = 98

Now, it is a matter of solving simultaneous equations.
Ill show you a solution by substitution method,
from (2) we can get b=98-a
substitute this equation to (1)

(1) becomes
a x (98-a) = 2001
98a - a^2 = 2001
which gives -(a-29)(a-69)=0
so a= 29 and b = 69

check: 29*69=2001
29+69=98

cheers!

Oops..... 2001/3 = 667, not 637 and neither 91 nor 7 are factors of 2001 ☺

It's 69 and 29.

29 and 69.

x=1st number
y=2nd number

x+y=98
xy=2001

y=98-x

x(98-x)=2001
98x-x^2=2001
x^2-98x+2001=0

you can factor this as
(x-69)(x-29)

so the answers are 69 and 29

a+b =98
ab=2001.
Now YOU tell me which formula you would use and what would a and b be. Quick. Ten points and a chocolate waiting for you
