I've been using Febreze fabric spray. It works really well.

If you can use a steam cleaner, that will work best for long term. The cigarette smoke leaves smell that reaches deeply into the fabric, almost like a smokey film. If we are taking about a heavy smoker than the smell could have even been absorbed by the wooden frame pieces, just flipping the furniture over and wiping down the inside with a bucket of hot soapy water works for this..
Fabreeze will work in the short term, but I would do deep cleaning to ensure lasting results.

If you are looking for a cheap way, I would also suggest Febreeze, but remember to spray your upholstery with it daily for awhile to get the smell out. Febreeze works wonders and I use it all over my house.
Having it professionally cleaned wouldn't be a bad idea either, and you can keep the smell from coming back with Febreeze daily. Good Luck!

I am a smoker and so far Fabreze has been the best way by far for getting that smoky smell out of furniture fabrics and my clothes. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you try it.
