Hi,

Basic SEO isn't difficult but there is a lot of knowledge to swallow. Because this question gets asked so much here at Yahoo! Answers, I've written a basic guide to SEO which is freely available for download at http://www.adambunn.co.uk/seo-beginners.php

Sometimes you will get away with the basic knowledge in my little book and sometimes you will need a lot more help from a professional; it all depends on what market you are in.

Good luck!

There's lots you can do. Make each page of your site as dedicated to a single subject as you can. Don't try any tricks of overloading keywords into the text. Most spiders only 'read' the fist 5000 characters of text (including html code) so anything you can shunt to an external CSS file is a bonus for your written message.

Get friends to install the Alexa toolbar (semi-spyware) and visit your site. Alexa supply the ratings for Google. Get them to search for your site through the search engines and click to your site that way.

Make sure you have plenty of links on your website and that others of links to yours. When mine was launched it was on the top of all search engines within 3 months because I did this.
