we subtract 3 from each side of the equation and get 4a =16 next,we divide by 4 and find that a=4
4a + 3 = 19
if a is 4
4 x 4 = 16 +3 19

The other answerers are right: when solving this equation, you should subtract 3 from both sides first, giving 4a = 16. *Then*, when you divide both sides by 4, you get a = 4.

However, you can divide by the 4 first if you want -- *as long as* you divide the entirety of each side by 4! That means that, on the left side, you divide both terms by 4, giving:

a + 3/4 = 19/4.

Then, when you subtract the 3/4 from both sides, you get

a = 19/4 - 3/4 = 16/4 = 4, which is the same answer we got doing it the other way.

As a general strategy: when you're solving an equation, you sort of work the order of operations *backwards.* The expression on the left side of the equation reads "4a+3," and the order of ops tells us that if we knew what a was, we would multiply it by 4 first, then add 3. When we solve for a, we undo those steps, last to first.

Hope that helps!

it's not 19 over 4 take three. it's 19 minus 3 all over four.

4a+3 = 19

add -3 both sides (addition property of equality)

4a+3-3 = 19-3
4a = 16

multiply both sides by 1/4 (multiplication property of equality)

a=4

4a + 3 = 19
4a = 16 (subtract 3 from both sides)
a = 4 (divide both sides by 4 to get a on it's own)

a = 4
