...is currently residing in India. She has done translation of some books & articles and now plans to take up free-lance translation work for individuals as well as for firms. Pls advice

My advice is that she goes back to Germany and translates for people in courts of law,after all English is the main language in the world and she would always have work!!

I don't think there's really a general preference. I guess it depends a bit on which language you are confronted with. Everyone learns English in school. And normally British English is taught. I remember my school books being all about Britain. Later you are usually more confronted to the American language through movies, music or TV. So I think that it's a matter of taste and the language you hear more often.

I think your friend is very much globalized. As for her talent in languages, I think she can pursue teaching german in india and have her lance translation work for cost as part time.

Man she will be in great demand!!!!!!!!!!!!
