We are 3 young ladies wanting to go out in budapest, we are all in our early 30's. Is it safe to go out at night when you don't speak the language.

Dokk Beach +36 20 91 999 91 is an open-air club that's a popular hang out for locals and foreigners alike. It is an island in the middle of the Danube that has been converted into a club that makes you feel like you're in the middle of a music video. With 6 different themes including a beach club, a club on the bridge, a club with a bed theme, a club with nothing but dancers in their underwear, and a rave club below the boat themed club, attendance can reach 10,000.

Cha Cha Cha is the place to go for something completely different. By day it's a cafe in the Kalvin Tér metro station (underground); by night it becomes a bar full of every type of Budapest local. The music is whatever the DJ (local and international) feels like and other than that, anything goes! In summer, focus switches to their open bar on Margit Sziget (Margaret Island). A more recent addition has been a ski chalet during winter! Check out an Eastern European take on post-modern.

Szóda is an other place to go out. By day it's a cafe in the old Gettho, close to the Shul but night it is a strange good bar for dancing and enjoy Budapest by night! Check this real hungarian place

Some advise:
Beware of the pickpockets (virtually everywhere you go nearby humans but especially on crowded trams and subway).

Watch your steps: most of the pathways and grassy places are covered with dog feces.

Never give money to policemen, they are not allowed to take cash by law.

Avoid walking alone at night (especially leaving the major roads). Survival chances are good but below 100%.

My wife and recently returned from Budapest, about three weeks. We are walkers, walked large stretches of Buda and Pest at all hours of the night and day. Did not have any trouble. Much english is spoken in Buda and also in Pest. It is not uncommon to see hundreds of folks in the streets late at nights, especially around the tram stations, great tram system, cheap, clean effecient.

Buda is of course very safe, expensive relative to Pest and pretty sterile. You are not with the locals much in Buda, tourist side of town. Although, we liked the Pest Buda ( local joke I guess) restaurnat down from the Hyatt, nutty waiters but colorful. Cheaper/more affordable but great food.

In Pest you are going with and living with the Hungarians, this is where they live, play and eat.

safety - stay away from the casino's, themselves are safe but attract night trade and unsavory types around them on the streets. safe....almost surely but not nice. Other than that we walked around late at night in pest and did not see anything untoward, or unsafe except for the occassional bit of prostitution trade, seems this is not terribly frowned upon and in the open a bit. Yes, since drunk driving in highly illegal you can sometimes see men sleeping in their cars late at night, slepping it off so to speak.

Pest - dinner for two, plenty to drink, nice places, maybe $30 USD. Buda - $75-&100 for same with exception of some local joints like the Pest-Buda restaurant.

You can safely walk around Pest, find a good locl place off the main drags, and enjoy a great dinner etc. The club scene is well known, look over the tourist books.

Engflish is quite common in Pest as is German. Most, but not all, places have english menus, and try to attract english speaking folks.

Hope you and your friends enjoy both Buda and pest as much as we did. Must, must try the public swimming poools, unbelievablly nice and elaborate pools with Spas, many pools inside for the cooler waether and the two large museums. Again, we walked at all times of night, across this great city, and never had a problem nor felt afraid.
