1) Supply and demand. There isn't that much of it, it's dangerous to bring into the country, and you need to pay everyone involved in getting it to the buyer.
2) They cut back on other things in their lives, like food and other simple pleasures.

Is it an expensive drug? Especially in comparison to other things of addiction. People spend far more getting trollied on a Friday night than it costs to by cocaine.
I would think it's all in the supply and demand - the more that there is available, the cheaper it is and vice versa.

because u have to offer the last people down the trafficking lines, a lot of money to do something illegal i.e. drug mules etc. and the cost just compounds.
everyday people afford it by turning to illegal activities themselves, damaging their families and basically ruining their lives
