I have a 2000 Ford Taurus, and I recently had the Check Engine light come on about 2 months. The mechanic stated it was someting about the compression. I had that fix, and now it has come on again. What does that mean?

By the Way, Is it still ok to drive while the light is on?

The light came on because your PCM detected a fault code, this could be a problem with motor or transmission. As some stated it could be as simple as a loss of pressure through the gas cap and will register a EVAP code when scanned. Unlike what some have suggested, do not take it to a Autozone or Advance store for scanning. The garage where you have your work done will want to see the codes that are set, and not a piece of paper with some scribbling on that they will give you. The Ford Taurus is notorious for EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) problems and I wouldn't be surprised if this is what is wrong with yours too. It is usually accompanied by lower gas mileage.

When the check engine light is on, that means the computer has detected a problem with the fuel delivery system. The most common cause is a sensor problem. Take it to Auto Zone and have them run a code scan for you, it's free.
If you drive it very much with the light on, you take a chance of ruining the catalytic converter. And that can get expensive. If it's running lean, you should detect a rotten egg smell. That will ruin the converter.
Compression has nothing to do with the check engine light.
Always have a qualified tech work on you car. The best ones are at the dealership. They've been trained and sent to school.
Hope this helps.

The check engine light will come on when there is a fault code set in the computer. It could be something as simple as the gas cap being left off while the engine is running, or it could be a more serious problem,

Have the computer scanned for codes (some auto parts stores and shops will do this for free) and the codes will tell you where the problem is!

In many cases it is a simple thing. Quite often on cars about the age of yours, the gas cap does not seal as it should. Replacement of the gas cap will fix the problem. Of course there are other conditions that could cause this. The most common being the oxygen sensor. It gets more complicated from here. Best to go to an Autozone, if you have one in your area. They will hook up an analyzer to the vehicle and tell you what the computer is detecting.

It could only be the admissions, my light has been on for months. They check it, erase it and it still comes back. As long as my car passes the PA state admissions test they don't worry about it. Also, if the car is newer they say that you need to turn the gas cap to the right and allow it to click a couple of times to secure it. Sometimes the seal may not be working on the cap so you need to replace it.

If you've talked to your mechanic a few times and the light keeps coming on, this is wahat I would do.

I would go to the store and get a roll of 1/2" electrical tape and cut off a piece about 1/2" long, stick the piece of tape directly on the dash to cover your Check Engine light.... BAM! Problem solved!

Look in your owner's manual under oil changes. My check engine light comes on every 5,000 miles to alert me that I need an oil change. There's a specific, non-obvious way to turn the light out, found in the owner's manual.

There are about 600 different P0001/ P0600 codes then transmission codes and Brake codes. Advance and Auto Zone can read the code. Then we Yamsters can jump all over it.
