A picture is worth 1000 words. Using appropriate schemes in your drawing, you can also show hidden lines which would not show in a photograph. In high school drafting we often practiced drawing objects from two or three perspectives, showing hidden lines. I never used drafting in my career so this may not be the answer you seek, but I hope it helps.

I use free hand sketches all the time for mech. elec.& structural
1st,,, on site observation may define paticular probs and application that could not be remedied on just a print and you may gain inspiration by studying a problem first hand and make appropriate changes as neccessary on paper free hand in any case 2 people may convey in words and have 2 ideas,, any way a free hand expresses your idea clearly ,,,, a picture is worth a 1000 words but it also is clear what you expect on paper w/out dispute

There are times when hand-rendered drawings are more appropriate than computer-aided drawings because they can be more artistic. If you were a real estate agent listing a full-page advertisement in the newspaper, a pencil-drawn drawing might look alot better to the readers. Or if you were an architect trying to sell your idea to a buyer, you might want to show him a jazzed-up version drawn by hand. It all depends on usage.
