I think of a sixth sense as the ability to put 2 and 2 together or obtain even more information than our senses are actually providing. For example many people could hear the noises of a darkened jungle but perhaps only a few could sense the silence possibly meaning danger. The sixth sense may include no sensation where you expect some. Diving deep into water many could sense the sudden change in temperature (at the thermocline) but how many will sense the danger. Standing on a girder high up on a building under construction many would sense the danger of losing balance and falling but how many would sense the danger that a slight wind could gust and blow them off. Many can see a stranger approaching but how many can sense (from body language?) that he means trouble or is in need of help? How many use their sixth sense to convert that first date into a lifetime of happiness? Hope that makes sense.

Well, that refers to several different things. What one are you meaning?

Some say a "sixth sence" about specific situations, though that is usualy experience more than instinct.

Some say a "sixth sence" for the paranormal, like E.S.P. This has been proven and documented, but also found to be a hoax with some.

There is always the "sixth sence" of the maternal nature. Womens intuition and the like.

As for my experience, I think that there are "things" that "tell" us what is going on around us without us using out sences of sight, smell, toutch, taste, or hearing. There are things in this world that are hidden from out general perspective. It takes time, but once you can look underneath the serfice of the world (metaphore) you can find that there are connections between things that you never knew existed.

sixth sense

Keen intuition, as in She had a sixth sense that they would find it in the cellar. This term alludes to a sense in addition to the five physical senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. [c. 1800]
