I began my passage to Pondy from the Subhashnagar bus stand in Bangalore City. Pondy is most easily accessible by road from Chennai (160 kms) and Bangalore (305 kms). I found that the bus service from Bangalore to be infrequent and wayfarers are well advised to book their bus tickets a week in advance to avoid disappointment. The nearest major airport to this slumberous town is Chennai. Pondy is connected to Chennai, Madurai and Trichy by train. It's also possible to hire a taxi from any of the major towns of South India to this seaside heaven.
The bus from Bangalore to Pondicherry was an overnight one, after about 8 hours of being tossed around like a ping-pong ball on the back seat of the bus I reached Pondicherry just as dawn was breaking out. With a rather stiff back, if I may add. On my arrival at Pondicherry New Bus Stand I was immediately surrounded by a motley crew of auto rickshaw-wallahs and self-styled local guides trying to hustle me into a hotel room or inside an auto-rickshaw. "Saar, saar, pleej come. I give you best room...". I was lucky enough to have been advised by a friend to head straight for a place which rents out two-wheelers to tourists. "You will be able to enjoy Pondicherry more if you are mobile and not dependent on a taxi, auto-rickshaw or bus for transport," my friend had said. That's exactly what I did, I took an auto-rickshaw straight to a two-wheeler rental shop and rented a Kinectic Honda for Rs. 100 per day. A few words of counsel here to all tourists: The first thing one must do on arrival at Pondicherry is book your tickets for the return, this is just to avoid any bother later when it's time to go back due to non-availability of tickets

Volvo? Sorry, no private or govt operator has, but Sharma has a service and comparing to any other this one is better. Only thing is they will reach Pondy by early hours that is around 3.30 to 4AM. Avoid any govt bus, as they will carry the crowd of Thiruvannamalai and the group will sure spoil your travel joy as they will sing, shout, cry, vomit, watch movie all through night etc., etc.,
