If anyone has any proof regarding the way it is spelt ... please let me know .....

It is "tortoise" and yes, it is pronounced as tortus. You can check the dictionary. Also, you can see the pronounciation key as well. dictionary.com is a good website.

I once read this book when I was younger, by Roahl Doahl (however you spell it) and one of the books was about a Tortoise...it was called Esiotrot, which is tortoise spelt backwards. You have the pronounciation right

Tortoise..you spelt it correctly...( to double check the spelling, when you go to answer someones question, just use the spell checker in there it will tell you if it is right or not, then delete it and write your answer to the question you are there for)......
Also prounounced as....Tor..toss... good luck..
