madeleine also known as Magdeleine, Magdalene and Madeline! In French a madeleine is a soft and sweet little bun. As for the name it's a lovely name! According to books (Some of them) Madeleines are supposed to be fun to be with, loving, compassionate and caring too. I know three of these, one Madeleine, one Magdaleine and one Magdelene! Two of them answer to the nick name Maddy and they're great so i daresay i like the name because i like the people!

I think it's lovely and unusual; every Madeleine I've known has been a very nice person so that probably influences my judgement (or is there some cause and effect?) and it's difficult to shorten to anything ugly.

The only possible drawback is that in France a madeleine is a type of cake or biscuit, and Proust's Memories of Times Past begins with the chief character dipping one into his drink and having the taste bring back a flood of memories. But I wouldn't see that as an impediment if you don't.

I think it's a lovely name, the only reservation I have is how it's bound to get shortened,Maddy's okay, but when she gets to school the whole Mad thing is going to come to the fore, you know how cruel kids can be.I was very careful when I named my daughter because of this.
