From experience, its best to first use single words. Such as "dress'', then "I Iike your dress". Then say "I like it", using expression on your face & in your voice.
If you use this approach, you are re-inforcing the name or noun,
& then, helping with the construction of the grammar.
If they say something very incorrectly, just repeat it the correct way. Most people trying to communicate don't mind you doing this, as long as you then answer, or respond to, their question or statement.
This is a completely different approach to actually teaching a language.

Hi , I have been living in Norway for 3 months nows, I know the feeling of not understanding people. I even feel frustrated sometimes cause of that. But I think that, first you should use your body language in the maximum, be very creative, eventhough you feel ridiculous sometimes, but dont´t worry it will turns out very funny. Next, try to learn the language from children, they help a lot. Finally, there are many sites on the net that can help you to study alone. And good luck!! it is not so difficult, just keep the good work !!

Try playing sharades, gestures are essential in conveying messages in any language. Learn the line "I don't speak your language but i'm willing to learn." in there language. This tells them that you are trying and they become more patient as a result. Everyday add new words to your vocabulary and you will pick it up in no time. I also recommend putting post-it notes on everything labeling it in the language you are trying to learn. Frequency is key. The more you see it the better you will remember it.
I hope this helps you and your friend.

i lived in beijing for 1 year and it was really difficult for me at first to communicate with chinese coz few of them can speak well in english. It was effective for me to use body language or gestures to communicate with them... but since i was in their country, i try to learn their language... at least i was able to communicate with them more effectively than just using mere gestures.
