We've twice travelled the US by motorhome.
Started out collecting souvenir mugs. Though they were useful, they took up so much room, were bulky to pack and too fragile.
And really, who needs 47 mugs (missed Nebraska both times)?
We also collected nice book marks (flat, small & inexpensive but, there again how many can you use)?
Bought some collectible stamps when we could find a post office.
Postcards from everywhere (we are not great photographers).
We collected small numbers of other things to; if I live to 300 I'll never have to buy another keychain, many of them are lovely.
Magnets were the answer. Small, easy to transport, cheap & interesting. We have many hundred now and our fidge is covered.
Every time I go to the fridge one catches my eye and I drift away.
Mostly however we just collected memories.
They will be with us forever.

I always keep the tickets and also buy a distinctive piece of jewelery from the actual place.

Spoons. I know, boring right? My grandmother left me her spoon collection when she died and I've been slowly adding to it.
