You could try ear drops (otex, cerumol or earex) to soften the wax as long as there is no pain in the ear. You may need your ears syringed though and you would have to go to the GP for this.
If you have any pain in the ear, then this may be an infection and you would have to see the doctor.

Couple cheap things you can try before selling your children so you can see the doctor ...
One is called an ear candle - no joke. It is a kind of rolled up tube that is tapered. You cut a hole in a paper plate and stick the smaller end into your ear and light the bigger end on fire.
I truly am serious ... what goes on is that the smoke some how gets sucked down and loosens the wax up ... looks real gross - but works, check it out on the web some where and you can usually get these at health food stores and even some pharmacies that are getting on the band waggon.
Another thing you can do (especially if you don't want to lose an affro), you can use some garlic oil with some olive oil and put a couple drops in your ear until the gunk comes out. the garlic will help kill any infection and helps in the healing process too ... kills any parasites that may be doing things too. Peace!!!

RE:
My left ear feels blocked, hearing is dulled and now there is a constant ringing in my ear?
Is there anything I can do to clear this up without having to go to the doctor? (as doctors appointments at my surgery are like gold dust!)

If the pitch of the ringing changes as you move your head, it's probably related to sinus congestion. (It's very possible if you're badly stuffed up.) For this, you can try pressing your knuckles against your nostrils, and blowing gently through your nose. This sometimes can help clear the sinuses behind your eardrums out. (Although, a word of warning - if you're really, really congested, this sometimes can make things worse.)
-
If the pitch of the ringing stays consistent as you move your head, you likely have a buildup of wax in your ear. Try using Debrox drops. You get these at most pharmacy-style stores. These can help soften the wax, and then you can coax it out with irrigation. They sell these little irrigation devices made of rubber that can be used to pump water into the ear. At hottest, you want the water lukewarm, or it can damage the ear.
-
I would actually advise you to go to a doctor first, though, in the off-chance there is something else going on. Even if it's just wax buildup, they have good equipment, and can sometimes get rid of the wax for you.

You can buy an ear syringe at most local pharmacies; it's rubber and has a ball and a spout on it. You fill the ball with lukewarm water and force the built-up wax out yourself. It saves a trip to the doctor.
Putting a couple of drops of peroxide into your ear is also an effective way to soften and loosen built-up wax.

It is almost impossible to live with tinnitus but you don't have to. If you are hearing the noises, whether all the time or intermittently, you must seek treatment immediately. But sadly, conventional treatments only treat the symptoms of tinnitus and may provide temporary relief at best.
The only way you could ever get rid of your tinnitus for good is by following the holistic approach to healing. By using a multidimensional treatment for tinnitus, we are tackling all tinnitus causative factors and eliminating these triggering elements from the root. This is the only path for permanent freedom from tinnitus.

Hi
Buy some Otosan ear candles in case it's just bloked wax. These are amazing and my hubby and mum have used them. You'd need help though to do it. I bought mine from a local Chinese herbal type shop in Salisbury. I don't know where you are in the world but most large towns have somewhere that sells them.

Use ear drops or an ear candle to get rid of the excess wax. DO NOT rootle around with a cotton bud!
