I have 40+ tattoos and I would not recommend taking anything to numb it. Alcohol will thin out the blood and cause you to bleed more ( 1 or 2 beers is ok) and by bleeding more could push some of the ink back out. If it's a professional artist doing the tattoo, he might refuse tattooing you because you are high, and depending on how high you are. I don't know if this will help you or not, but women in general can handle the pain better than guys can when getting tattooed, you can ask any professional tattoo artist and they'll agree. Another thing to remember is that if tattoos hurt that bad...I wouldn't get as many as I got. Also keep in mind that different spots on the body hurts a lot more then other spots...for example the top of the foot, ankles, around the nipple area. This should also be discussed with your artist as well. Since it's your first I highly recomend going to a professional. Reguardless of what many say, tattoos do have a sense of pain to it, but I have talked to others who sweared they didn't feel anything...to me thats hog wash! Getting tattooed would be more irratating and an uncomfortable feeling then pain. After the tattooing is done...the pain of getting one is pretty much done as well. To me a tooth ache hurts a lot worst then getting tattooed. Like I said before...if getting a tattoo hurt that bad, people would stop after the first one, but I hear people planning on getting their second one before the first one is healed. Each person is different, some has a high tolerance to pain and others not so high. Go to a tattoo parlor and watch someone get one done and you can see for yourself. Good Luck.

Tattoos really don't hurt that bad and the pain you do feel probably wouldn't be helped by any medication. It's not a deep pain like if you get an injection. It's more like a scraping pain or even a light sunburn. Don't take any pain meds or drink alcohol before because both can thin your blood and make it bleed more during the tattoo. While everyone is different as far as how much pain they can take I'll assure you that the pain wont be nearly as bad as you think. I have tattoos and I have a pretty low tolerance for pain. Not to mention I'm scared to death of blood and needles. I get queasy if someone else gets a needle. Tattoos don't bother me at all though. You'll be fine. Check out this link. It's got great info for first timers. http://tattoo.about.com/od/tattoo101/a/tatbegguide.htm
Good luck.

A few stiff drinks will definitely numb the skin and any other area's that might be sensitive to the tattoo. But before you take the tattoo, reconsider carefully if you really want one. Imagine that when you are 60 years old, the tattoo will still be visible. And what might seem cool now, can very possibly a huge object of shame to you or your close ones.

there are some tattoo artists who are licensed to use a cream that numbs the area. It is fantastic! works a charm. I have 3 tattoos, and dont listen to the people who say it doesnt hurt, it does!!! Everyone has different pain thresholds, and different opinions on tattoos, so you do what YOU think is right. you only live once and its much better to regret something you have done than something you havent! Go for it, hope it works out

The tattooist will numb & clean the area before hand. It will still hurt as the needle that does the outline goes in to every layer of skin and the needle that does the colouring and shading only goes in to four layers of the skin.
Ask yourself this? It may look nice now but in years to come when you're old and your skin has gone saggy. What will it look like then?
It's more of rareity to see somebody without a tattoo these days. I regret having mine done.

I was so scared when I got my tattoo. I thought that it was going to be sooooooo painful. It was no where near as painful as I thought it was going to be. I guess it depends on what part of the body you are getting it done on. I was going to get it on my foot but the tattooist said that is a sensitive area so I got it done just above my shoulder blade. Other things are more painful so don't worry about it.

there are things you can do to numb the skin, but it's probably not worth it...
...your best bet is to get the tat done and wear it as a badge of pride.
Make sure you;
a) Get something that you are going to be happy to wear for the rest of your life (cos removal leaves UGLY scars).
b) Get it done on a bit of skin that won't sag (shoulders, kidneys ankles, that type of area. Women's skin is more prone to sagging than mens, and if you only have one tat in your life and it ends up looking like Salvadore Dali's clock in about 10 years, boy are you gonna be PI55ED!!!!)

It wont work cos the tattoo goes into the flesh, just grin and bear it, but dont drink alcohol before as you will bleed badly.
The pain is more like a burning than anything

If you pinch yourself just before it start and then periodically through out this WILL help because the brain can only process and recognise one type of pain at a time, so get it to recognise you pinching yourself instead. I have done this for my 2 tatooes and 3 births and also when I have broken a bone (i have broken 15 now!!) so IT DOES WORK.
dont forget to breath either! if your tense it will make it worse.

If you don't want any nasty pain, why not get a nice paint on/transfer tattoo and leave the real ones to other people. I thought the pain was part of the process silly bint.
